The picturesque Balearic Island of Menorca (sometimes known as Minorca) is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, and with good reason - somewhat quieter than it's neighbour Mallorca, but no less entertaining, the island is the ultimate combination of sun, sand and good company.  Menorca's capital, Mao (Mahon), is famed for its restaurants, clubs and bars and has a spectacular deep harbour that makes it an ideal destination for ferries and cruise ships.  The island is also regarded as one of the last untouched areas in the Mediterranean and has a UNESCO Biosphere listing placed on a large portion of its territory.  Diving, swimming and hiking are all incredibly popular pursuits.  The lookout at Monte Toro is famed, as is the Placa Alfons III and the Xoriguer Gin Distillery.  In fact Menorca is known for its gin, produced from the juniper berry that grows all over the island.

Although quite small, Minorca is an easy island to get to from international destinations, particularly owing to its ferry and air connections.  Ferries from Valencia, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona dock regularly at Mahon, whilst the western town of Ciutadella is visited by a frequent ferry from Alcudia.  The island's airport, Minorca International (sometimes known as Mahon Airport), is small but busy, seeing close to a million passengers each year.  Airlines such as First Choice, easyJet, Thomas Cook and Thomson Fly serve the complex with flights to the United Kingdom, Spain and other European cities.  As many of the island's most beautiful beach spots are reachable only by private vehicle, car hire is a must.  Rental companies such as Solmar, National-Atesa, Avis and Hertz are based on the island.
